Hātefi Jāmī ( 822- 927 Lunar) was a nephew of Abd ar-Rahmān Jāmī. He was a capable poet of the timurid era who was competent and skillful in all poetics, specifically in narrative Masnavi. Following Nizami, he has made several narrative poems like Layla and Majnun, Shirin and Khosrow, Haft Manzar (Seven visages), Tamornameh. At the end of his life, he composed an epical poem about Shāh Ismā’il’s victories which he wasn’t able to complete. In addition to the Masnavis named above, there is a poetical work left from him. Tamornameh is the best and most important work of his, which is a historical epic about Timur’s life, wars, braveries, conquests, destructiveness and slaughters. Hātefi has composed this poem based on Zafarnamah by Sharaf al-Din Ali Yazdi and as he himself has said and as shown by the comparison of these two texts, he has completely stayed true to Zafarnameh and except for some poetical expressions which are essential to the vers, he hasn’t added anything to the text, rather,he has sometimes shortened the text. In composing this epic poem, on the one hand, he has used Shahnameh as a model and on the other, Iskandarnameh by Nizami. Some of its oratorical techniques have been influenced by Shahnameh and its general structure has taken effect from Iskandarnameh. Besides its literary value, Tamornameh is historically significant too. It’s a reliable resource about Timur’s biography and conquests.
